Mocha vs Frappe

If you aren’t already familiar with the contents of a coffee drink, there is a good chance that you won’t make anything out of its name either. While simply asking your barista about the contents of the drinks they are serving is the easiest and the best way of figuring things out on the spot, most people are embarrassed to walk into the coffee shop and ask questions.

For this reason, people usually end up with drinks that they don’t enjoy as they randomly pick a drink on the menu, hoping that it contains the ingredients they wanted. With plenty of drinks to choose from, getting the correct drink with a random guess is almost impossible. If you are too shy to ask your barista, you will have to do your research before you go to the coffee shop.

As we feel like it’s our duty to help you learn about all the drinks that you may encounter at the coffee shop, we decided to compare two drinks that could be considered cornerstones of a coffee shop menu.

Mocha and frappe are the two drinks we will be talking about today. While not as known as drinks such as a latte or a cappuccino, it’s possible to find these drinks on the menu of every coffee drink, which is why you will definitely want to know about them.

What Is the Difference Between a Mocha and a Frappe?

Truth be told, mocha and a frappe are two completely different coffee drinks to the point where the only common trait they share is that they are both coffee.

Mocha is an espresso drink that consists of espresso, hot milk, and chocolate. The chocolate can be added in the form of cocoa powder and sugar, chocolate syrup, or even regular chocolate.

On the other hand, a frappe is a type of iced coffee that consists of instant coffee, water, and ice. Milk and sugar are also commonly added to frappe, but they are completely optional.

Since there are plenty of differences that separate a mocha from a frappe, we would say that the main differences between the two drinks are the type of coffee used, the way they are served, the usage of milk, and the usage of chocolate.

While a frappe is made with instant coffee and water, is served cold, and contains no additional flavor, a mocha is made with espresso and milk, can be served both hot and cold, and contains added chocolate flavor.

What Is a Mocha?

Mocha, originally known as Caffè mocha, is an espresso drink that originates from Italy.

Just like most espresso drinks, the preparation of a mocha starts with an espresso shot. After the espresso is ready, chocolate is added on top of it. Since the chocolate can be added in any form, it’s possible to add any type of chocolate that you enjoy to your cup. The chocolate is then followed by steamed milk and a thin layer of milk foam on top.

As the preparation process of a mocha is extremely similar to a latte, a mocha is also called a chocolate-flavored latte at times. Considering that the only difference between these two drinks is the addition of chocolate, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that mocha is indeed a chocolate-flavored latte.

Even though the original recipe doesn’t call for it, a mocha can be topped with things such as whipped cream, cinnamon, and even marshmallows at times, giving it an even sweeter flavor.

What Is a Frappe?

A frappe is an iced coffee drink that originates from Greece.

Unlike most coffee drinks we are used to, a frappe is actually prepared with instant coffee, which may seem strange considering that brewed coffee is usually the choice for coffee drinks.

That being said, making a frappe is quite simple. Instant coffee and a small amount of water are combined in a shaker and blended until it becomes foamy. When the mixture is ready, it’s poured into a glass that is filled with ice cubes and more cold water.

Optionally, sugar and milk can also be added to a frappe. While sugar is often added to the shaker, milk is added directly to the glass.

Even though it’s a drink that is prepared with instant coffee, a frappe is one of the most popular coffee drinks in Greece.

What Is a Mocha Frappe?

You may be wondering what a Mocha Frappe is, considering that mocha and a frappe are two completely separate drinks.

A Mocha Frappe is a drink that is specific to McDonald’s McCafe, which combines a mocha and a frappe in a certain way. It contains elements from both of these drinks with the ingredients of ice, whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and a chocolate-flavored coffee base that also includes milk.

Simply put, the coffee base is blended with ice and topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle, creating an iced drink that is quite sweet but also packed with calories.

Conclusion

Even though mocha and a frappe are two very different drinks, they are both enjoyable in their own right.

While someone who really enjoys the taste of chocolate will definitely go for a mocha, those who are looking for a lighter coffee experience will find themselves to be quite happy with a glass of frappe.

Have a great day, and enjoy your coffee!
